A bit of this, a bit of that, and a lot about computers.

About me

My name

I’m writting this for people that can’t understand how many different names I have.

Let’s start with the begining, my parents named me, when I was born, “José Pablo Ezequiel Fernández”. That is the name in all my documents that were issued by the Argentinian goverment.

When I reached 5 years old, the first computer appeared on my home, and with that, the first games. It came the time when I had to type my name in the scores of a game and I didn’t know how to do it (I didn’t know how to read or write at that time), so, my father taught me to write “Pupeno”. “Pupeno” is a kind of nickname. It was my computer-nickname. Everywhere in the computer I used that name, but nobody knew me by that name. That started to change in 1996, when I started using the Internet and, as you can guess, I started to communicate with other people thru the Internet. The time came when I’ve built my own web page, and of course, I was Pupeno, and my web page ended up here, in pupeno.com. Some authorities of my school saw my web page and started calling me Pupeno, and then, my friends followed. I addopted it as my name. That is, if you ask me what my name is, I am Pupeno.

Latter I’ve became an Spanish (and European) citizen. That government doesn’t allow people to have three names and mandates to have two last names (father and mother). So, my early name “José Pablo Ezequiel Fernández” turned into “José Pablo Fernández Silva” (”Silva” is my mother’s lastname).

And that’s only the short story.

Choices

We all make choices, here you can find some of my choices. I believe the reason for doing this is to make it easier for others to make the same choices as I do; and the reason to want that is that the more people that make the same choices the easier it’ll be for me. In fact, I believe that is so strong that many, many people base many, many choices only in what the rest around or the majority has chosen. That’s not my case, as you’ll see.

  • Operating Systems: Kubuntu, otherwise, Ubuntu. On my servers I still run Debian GNU/Linux but I’d like to give Ubuntu server a chance. I wouldn’t mind working with HURD (that’s only a kernel, not an OS, I should mention GNU or GNU/Hurd or maybe Debian GNU/Hurd), OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Plan9.
  • Programming Languages: My own yet-to-be-developed Lisp, otherwise, Scheme, Common Lisp, Erlang, Python, Haskell, etc. I can code in other languages, like C and C++; but I wouldn’t choose them unless totally necesary. It is very unlikely that I would choose any three letter P-starting language designed for web sites.
  • Natural Languages: lojban, otherwise Esperanto.
